Project $1 '59 Edsel Ranger

Saturday April 3, 2004 I was checking out the Edsels for sale page on Edsel.com whcn I found the following ad.

Posted on April 2, 2004

Year: 1959

White Ranger 2-door was my grandfather's car and not run for 12 years.  Body dents and surface rust, but new tires for transport.  Original window sticker.  For parts or hopefully for restoration.  Priced at $1, to a good home.

Call Dave Palmer at (562) XXX-XXXX (cell) or (562) XXX-XXXX (days).  Car is located in Long Beach, CA.

Model:
  Ranger

Body Style:
  2-door sedan

VIN:
  C9UC717976
  64C EE 50 31M 3 1

Location:
  California

Price:   $1

I immediately called on the car, which to my surprise was still avaliable. The next day I drove to Long Beach to look at the car, which turned out to be restorable. I hauled the car home that afternoon. The car came with the original window sticker, original sales contracts, original dealer frames, and both sets of original keys. The car has a rare factory padded dash.

This Edsel was sold new at Palmer Lincoln Mercury (no relation to former owner) in Glendale, CA on March 19, 1959.

Monday April 5, 2004 Got the Edsel running after borrowing a carb and coil off my '60 parts car. The car actually runs sweet! Took the gas tank and radiator out and delivered them to a local radiator shop.

Wednesday April 7, 2004 Installed a new water pump and fuel pump. Removed and cleaned out the generator. The car is now waiting for the radiator and gas tank to come back.

Sunday April 11, 2004 Removed the thrashed dash pad. Cleaned the very slimy windows.

Monday April 26, 2004 Got the Edsel registered for the first time since 1990. Hopefully Sacramento will process the paperwork correctly and re-register the old black plates.

Saturday May 1, 2004 The car is now driveable with new brakes and a new trans. Installed an Edelbrock chrome air cleaner until I can find a replacement for the missing original. Everyone knows that chrome on the motor makes it go faster anyway, expecially when it says Edelbrock.

Saturday July 10, 2004 Bought a '59 Edsel Ranger four door sedan to use as a parts car. The roof is rusted through, but the car has plenty of good parts to give.

Thursday December 23, 2004 I got the car back from being painted. The car is now white with talisman red (pink) spear and roof. Today I swaped over a straight grille and bumpers from the '59 parts car. A huge thanks goes to my fiance Jenn who paid for part of the body and paint work as an Xmas gift. I also had correct bias ply whitewalls installed. I am driving the car home tonight to park in front of my house for Christmas. Next I plan to tackle the interior.

Thursday December 30, 2004 Installed a new electric wiper motor kit from Concours Parts to replace the broken and outdated original vaccum wiper motor. The conversion took an hour and a half. I was able to reuse the original dash knob and bezel on the new switch.
